Phase 1 Construction Complete

Construction activities for Phase 1 improvements are now complete.  Phase I work included moving electrical overhead lines underground, modifying traffic signals at Maya Street and Whitestone Road, creation of a wetland area and other mitigation areas, several drainage improvements, the installation of 16 new street lights, new sidewalk on the north side of the road, repairing and repaving the existing roadway as well as widening the road to four lanes. Those two new lanes, however, will remain closed until the completion of Phase 2 to allow for a smoother transition.  Final striping will be done prior to the opening of all travel lanes.”

Phase 2 Work Underway

Phase 2 of the project has already started. Phase 2 will improve Jamacha Boulevard from the intersection with Sweetwater Springs Boulevard to Spring Glenn Lane, and will include improvements from Omega Street to Huron Street. These improvements include complete resurfacing of Jamacha Boulevard with rubberized asphalt which is quieter and lasts longer, and the additional under-grounding of existing overhead utility lines. The project consists of road widening, sidewalks and bike lanes along Jamacha Boulevard. A frontage lane will also be constructed at Omega Street.

Project Description

The road improvements along Jamacha Boulevard for Phase 1 expanded the existing two travel lanes of roadway to four, added bike lanes, and  provided a concrete sidewalk on the north side and walkways on the south. The first phase of the project included the approximately one-mile road segment between Spring Glen Lane and Omega Street in the vicinity of Spring Valley, Supervisorial District 2. The second phase will include work from Sweetwater Springs Boulevard to Spring Glenn Lane, and will include improvements from Omega Street to Huron Street.Workmen finishing pavement

A late addition that was not part of the original project, but was done to save money in the long run, was the improvement of storm drains. It always makes sense to “start from the bottom up” when dealing with road improvement. As one project team member said, “There’s no sense in tearing up a newly paved road next year to work on a culvert that has gone bad.” So this work was incorporated into the current project, which added a bit to the cost, but will save taxpayer dollars long term

A map showing the areas of construction is available here.
